Thrivestry Master the Art of Thriving
Led by long-time affiliate owner and CrossFit Games athlete, Coach JJ, Thrivestry is full of fun and safe lesson plans designed for ‘regular folk’ who will be making gains at your gym for decades.

Master the Art of Thriving

Thrivestry (pronounced “thrive”-“stree”) is the combination of the words ‘thrive’ and ‘mastery’, and was created as a concept to represent mastering the art of thriving at life. We believe that we can do more at the gym than just an hour of sweaty ‘exer-tainment’, and that the pursuit of movement mastery helps us master other aspects of ourselves and our lives. Our lesson plans are set up to make regular people awesome and your coaches into heroes! Find out more at www.thrivestry.com

Planning

It all starts with planned progressions, scheduled throughout the year to match up with calendar days and events. There are 3 'seasons' each year that are 4 months long with each season still focusing on GPP with just a little more focus on one area. The 3 seasons are: The Open, running, and the barbell. We plan the skill work so that it applies to the seasons, the workouts coming up, as well as bench marks. We also do bench marks and 'CrossFit Classic' workouts 2 times per week (or more) to guarantee that people's Beyond the Whiteboard "Fitness Level" stays up to date.

Customization for Everyone

Every workout has 3 scaling options for each movement (as opposed to 3 separate tracks). They are called Health, Athletic, and Performance. We know that it is best if people have the flexibility to change each movement individually for the best workout stimulus. Our Performance level is reasonable for 'regular folks' (rarely do we require squat snatches, muscle ups, etc. in metcons). For those who are ready for an extra challenge, there is a 'scale up' option where we can do heavier loads and more advanced movements. The program also is tailored to work with large groups (so no workouts that take up too much space, people need 2 barbells each, their own GHDs, etc.)

No More Confusion - The Scaling Guide

If one person finishes a workout in 12 minutes, and another person in 27 minutes... They might have done the same workout, BUT THEY ARE NOT ON THE SAME PROGRAM. It is important that people get the correct stimulus and that people are on the same page. There is also the issue that one person is waiting around for 15 minutes. That is 25% of their training time that day! Thrivestry gives you concrete numbers to help people finish for the right stimulus and to make sure that the class runs well. By having it in spelled out, members will be smarter about their scaling choices, and coaches can 'course correct' mid workout so that one person isn't embarrassed because they are holding everyone up.

Fitness Level

A gauge for your overall Fitness and Progress. This is a single number that captures how your performance stacks up to the rest of the community.

What To Expect

Every minute of the class is accounted for, with 'extra credit' for those who want more. We dictate the context (practice, competition, mental toughness), the warm up, mobility work, and skill practice. We do a metcon about half of the time, and a lift and a short metcon the other half. We focus on one lift for 6 weeks with other lifts mixed in to prevent boredom. There is a combination of percentage based lifting as well as 'max effort' style. Each workout has scaling for every movement individually, with a scaling guide and coaching tips so there is no confusion on the stimulus. We also include cash outs on days with shorter workouts to satisfy the 'more cardio' crowd as well as hypertrophy work for those who want to add muscle.

In 2004 he was competing and coaching Mixed Martial Arts and started doing CrossFit to prepare for his fights. In 2005 he co-founded one of the oldest and most successful affiliates: Diablo CrossFit. He has been programming since 2005 and has clients that have been doing his workouts for over 10 years. After programming for hundreds of athletes PER DAY, he started programming for multiple locations, and then began helping other gyms with their programming remotely. The competitive athletes he coached at the original gym have had more than 88 unique appearances at the Regional and the Games, with a number of podium finishes at the Games... But he is most proud of the thousands of 'regular folks' he has helped live better lives through awesome programming and amazing class experiences!
